Your Money or Your Life: 9 Steps to Transforming Your Relationship with Money and Achieving Financial Independence: Revised and Updated for the 21st Century, By Vicki Robin, Joe Dominquez, and Monique Tilford.
(Reviewed by Jane)
I actually read the first edition of this book in the early 90s, when my husband and I were just starting to make enough money to be able start saving and investing. I was searching around for something a little different than just a dry book on investing, and the premise of this book appealed to me.
In a nutshell, the exercises and anecdotes in the book force you to assess how much of your life, you give over to making money. Once you factor in EVERYTHING involved in your job, or what you do to make money, it really hits you between the eyes, how much of your life and life energy, might be slipping away. …
Next up, once you know how much you’re REALLY making for an hour of work, then you start wondering if all the stuff you’re buying, is REALLY worth the effort it takes to make that money. This was particularly instructive for me and although I’ve always been a saver and pretty good with money, it smacked me right between the eyes.
Here’s the great thing; the new edition contains the same principals that were useful many years ago, but it’s updated for the current economic environment, where people are afraid to invest aggressively. Instead, when many are hunkering down, saving money and reassessing what they spend their money on, this book is so timely. Many of us having gone from investing, to gathering and this book will give you an entirely new perspective on your finances. You’ll learn that to live more frugally can actually be energizing, empowering and for me, an intellectual challenge.
“Your Money or Your Life” could truly be one of those transformational books that will change the way you approach your entire financial life and philosophy; I know it was for me, twice!
