Tizzy’s Movie Review: “Precious”
This film is so powerful and heavy that it’ll leave you jaw dropped and blown away. It’s based on the novel “Push” by Sapphire and tells the story of an illiterate 16-year-old girl in Harlem who’s pregnant with her second child and lives with an abusive mother (played by an Oscar worthy Mo’Nique). Desperate to change her life, she seeks help from two mentors, a teacher and a welfare employee.
Everyone had excellent acting chops. Mariah Carey plays the welfare employee, portraying a woman who puts appearance last and helping people first. She’s come a long way since “Glitter”! The woman who plays her teacher at the alternative school, Paula Patton, also plays an excellent mentor. It’s the performances though by Gabourey Sidibe (Precious) and Mo’Nique that will move you the most.
This movie is only for adults. The topics and scenes are very intense and at times make you feel a bit uncomfortable, but not enough to prevent you from enjoying it as a whole. It’s just one of those movies that you have to see. You won’t be disappointed. Just make sure you’re in the right mindset before going into it.
