Dom and Jane,
We have a big problem here on Gaylord St. I’ve been a Saints fan my entire life. I’m 41 years old, and I’ve suffered through all of their crappy seasons. I’ve dreamed of them making it to the Super Bowl, and wondered if it would ever happen in my lifetime. And now it’s happening.
BUT…my wife’s sister is getting married that same day. When they planned their wedding this past summer I didn’t even know what day the Super Bowl was, and never thought about my team having a conflict with the wedding.
I agreed last summer to be an usher in the wedding, but now the wedding is right at kickoff time. I’ll be tied up with the wedding and the reception. I told my wife that perhaps they might want to pick someone else now, because I’m only an usher, and she is furious. The word she used last night was “sickening.”
The way I see it, it’s her sister’s second wedding. She’s about our age, was married briefly in her 20s, and now is marrying a guy she’s been living with for four years. It can’t be that big of a deal if I’m not there. Who in the world would miss me?
I’ve got a group of about ten Saints fans, and we’ve all watched every game together for years. They’re all fired up about this huge Super Bowl party, and to think I’d invest all that time for years, only to miss the Super Bowl party. Recording the game and watching later is not what I’m looking to do. I want to be at the party!
Of course we’re fighting like crazy about this. My wife says I’m a heartless jerk by putting a football game over her sister’s big day, but it’s her SECOND big day, and with someone she’s lived with for awhile. Shouldn’t I be able to bag out to go to the Super Bowl party?
